Frieze Masters hosts VIP event at Locanda Locatelli featuring Italian olive oil producers who are passionate about art and agriculture in equal measure.
Frieze Masters offers a platform to the cultures of Italian olive oil, in collaboration with Locanda Locatelli, the only Italian restaurant in London awarded a Michelin star. On October 7, 2016, Frieze will host “Culture of Italian Olive Oil”, a tasting event dedicated to extra virgin olive oil (E.V.O.O.) Italian and the close relationship between art and the world of agriculture in the Regent’s Park venue of Locanda Locatelli.
Testimony to this deep connection will be sixteen Italian producers of extra virgin olive oil who are also among other distinctions.
The event, curated by Cornelia Lauf, independent curator, proposes a selection of premiere extra virgin olive oils to be presented by Domitilla Calamai and Anna Federici, sommeliers with diplomas from Bibenda, the Italian Foundation of Wine and Olive Oil Sommeliers. Domitilla Calamai is a writer, organic farmer, and collector of peonies; Anna Federici is a biodynamic farmer and art collector.
The producers invited are: Giovanni and Patricia Aldobrandini, Matteo Boetti, Valentina Bruschi and Alessandro Mocciaro Li Destri, Giuseppe Catalano di Melilli, Anna Federici and Roberto D’Agostino, Nina zu Fürstenberg and Giancarlo Bosetti, Giuseppe Gallo and Cristina Leonardi Gallo, Noëma and Klio Kosuth, Piervittorio Leopardi and Livia Berlingeri Leopardi, Peter Sartogo and Martina Mondadori Sartogo, Domitilla Calamai and Mattia Falchetto Osti, Laura Einaudi and Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, Remo and Sally Salvadori, Bernardo and Costanza Scammacca del Murgo, Oliviero Toscani.
The olive oil of our host, Chef Giorgio Locatelli, will be prominently featured.
Italy is the only country in the world to have in its territory more than a thousand varieties of olive trees, from the north of Lake Garda to the extreme south of Sicily. The different cultivar oils express wonderful quality, following sustainability practices, healing and maintaining the territory, preserving a unique biodiversity. A mosaic of tradition and modernity that enhances the beauty and uniqueness of the landscapes of the Italian regions.
Cornelia Lauf proposed this marriage to Frieze Masters to emphasize the close link between the millenial culture of oil with the role of the producer, also a cultural protagonist. Alighiero Boetti, Emilio Corti, Giuseppe Gallo, William Kentridge, Joseph Kosuth, Ignazio Mortellaro, Remo Salvadori and others.
The relationship with our land may be the last frontier of contemporary art. Joseph Beuys declared that “the defense of nature is anthropological action”.
To obtain this extraordinary product it is necessary to observe with great attention the rhythms of nature, prune the plant in a harmonious way so that air and light can pass through its branches, follow carefully the collection of olives: the process of pressing the olives must take place very quickly (within a maximum
of 12 hours). The craftsmanship of the olive mill, high technology machinery help protect this liquid nutritional and pharmaceutical properties.
During the tasting, Murano glasses, and ceramics by artists will be featured, including Alan Belcher, Roberto Caracciolo, Manuel Gorkiewicz, Nicoletta Gualdi, Coralla Maiuri, Tristano di Robilant.
The sommeliers will reveal to the public the characteristics and history of each olive oil producer, introducing the participants to the secrets of a real oil tasting.
